In this discussion group we will be discussing whether the creation and use of technology better supports or debunks Walker Percys belief that seeing something is less interesting and great then the first person to see it. We will also discuss whether it affects seeing it in person opposed to seeing it on a screen.

2)Student power. It’s easy to see the role of teacher as oppressor in Freire’s analysis of education, and to recognize the ways in which teachers must change those oppressive behaviors. But Freire argues fairly directly that teachers can’t produce student learning or student freedom. On page 6, Freire says “people subjected to domination must fight for their emancipation,” suggesting that progress–where it occurs–is going to result from student power, not professors changing their actions. Use your understanding of Freire’s ideas to analyze the role of student power at WCU, identifying and proposing ways in which students can achieve their own emancipation.
Thesis
In “The ‘Banking’ Concept of Education” by Paulo Freire, Freire points out the disconnect that we commonly see in todays learning systems between the teachers and the students. Education is a complex system that is in a general form when most students need a more hands on and helpful approach. We will be discussing how students will take their own education into their hands, by forms of organization and a sense of togetherness needed for change. Students should use the power they have to form an education system by the students for the students.
Quotes
“Education as the practice of freedom—as opposed to education as the practice of domination—denies that man is abstract, isolated, independent, and unattached to the world; it also denies that the world exists as a reality apart from people.”Page 4-5
“Education thus becomes an act of depositing, in which the students are the depositories and the teacher is the depositor. Instead of communicating, the teacher issues communiqués and makes deposits which the students patiently receive, memorize, and repeat.”Page 1

I will be discussing how better relationships between students and teachers will be more beneficial for both parties.

Students usually are talked at instead of taught. For most cases students teach themselves opposed to learning from the teachers. Teachers should not only try to inform students on the content but also be open to learning from the students themselves. Communicating with your peers is a better way to learn because if they are talking to each other then they are able to help other comprehend the content and make sure everyone understands. Students learn and understand differently so if they are struggling in class then they are able to ask their peers outside of class for assistants. By students helping students we not only learn the co tent but we also learn how to help each other. Students also help teachers by asking questions and by also shedding light on topics that teachers are unknowing about. Most teachers do not know a lot of information on technology so we as a younger generation are able to assist them in the transition towards a more technologically advanced future.

How space impacts our learning capabilities. Both in our brain and our environment. With the West Chester campus we are able to talk to our teachers one on one. Learning is different for everyone and our earning environment also effects people different. Most people in the discussion group prefer the traditional smaller, more high school like classroom and they also prefer young teachers because we feel we are able to connect more with them and they understand us more. We find that lectures tend to go off topic and it does not cover the initial question that was asked. When we look at a person physical “space” it also varies in that someone can be able to focus longer then another and also people can study longer and be able to intake information more than another. We see that some people do work better when they are comfortable such as their dorms or in a common area and others prefer the structure of being in a classroom to learn and retain their information.
Memorization, how it benefits a student, and how it disadvantages a student.

Today we talked about the memorization and how especially in high school you were programmed to memorialize opposed to getting hands on experience and training about how the world works. In high school the teachers only want you to go to the next level and don’t really help plan your future. High school is based on a mandatory curriculum that you must take and is filled with basic courses that you most likely will never use again. High school you learn subjects and courses only for the purpose of saying you learned it with no further meaning after high school. There are some beneficial aspects to high school memorization such as science if you chose to go down a career path in medicine etc. Most high schools learn a unit and then never go back to that unit so mesmerizing it just to pass the test becomes pointless. In conclusion the group spent most of the time discussing the lack of preparation most high schools give their students prior to sending them off into their futures.
