Discussion group #4

Leader: Sean Redding (Myself)

In today’s discussion i wanted to talk about how media has impacted on how society views things and holds value to it. Unfortunately, it decided to down pour today, and no one seemed to show up (as expected.) Since that is the case, I’ll just talk about it on here. One thing I have noticed that connected with the reading, is the value of something great becomes diminished once every starts seeing/using it. For example, The Grand Canyon used to be held to a very high standard when it was talked about being one of the most beautiful places to see. Now in today’s society you can go on the internet and see almost every single part of the canyon, maybe even more. With everyone already having seen such a beautiful sight it diminishes in value. Sure it is still amazing, but it would be even more amazing if only a few people have ever seen it. With social media every event now has someone recording, taking pictures, or somebody ready to pull there phones out. Percy sees that social media diminishes value into extraordinary events, and makes them less important to witness in person.
