In this discussion group we talked about our experiences with the discussion groups to see what was the best ways of conducting a discussion group and what were ways which negatively impacted the purpose of the discussion group. We talked about how the topics were always lame. I don’t really agree with this point but the other members did. We talked about how awkward silences kind of kill the discussion group and is very discouraging for the leader. It makes them feel like people don’t care about it. We also talked about how if you have a good discussion group then it allows for everyone to interact and become friendly with one another. It allows for friends to be made all while doing something easy in order to get an A. We all believe that this is the easiest thing that we have done in college. The only down side that I see is actually going to it. Outside of that, its good to interact. We all enjoy how the semester went with these discussion groups because it is also a big part of their grade and it’s simple enough to not have to think about what is going to happen.

Comments on Kira Aves 2/3 project

Praise: I like the supporting detail you chose in order to complete this topic because this topic was challenging.

Negative: Build upon this and be a little more descriptive. Good topic just be a little more specific

Percy: Great quote. Really outlines your topic. Allows for you to build upon this

Comments for Makayla’s Teams Draft

Positive: I like the idea of getting involved for students to receive a better experience

Negative: Just be a little more specific with this point. I like the idea just be more specific and expand on it.

Percy: I like this quote because of the depth of it. It talks about how a rare student understands how this works. You have to really dive deep into it

Comments on Ava Hill’s Topic Proposal

Positive: It was good to see you use both Freire and Percy to introduce that knowledge is only achieved through experience.

Negative: My question is how would the professor giving the students help? I feel as though it may be hard to tie this in.

Use of Percy: I like how you used Percy’s quote to directly correlate to your thesis.

In this weeks discussion group we will talk again about “The Loss of the Creature” by Percy. Specifically about how Percy talks about everyone taking the beaten track or shortcut which does not make it short anymore. We will talk about the benefits of not taking the shortcut or beaten track and opinions if we should take the shortcut way. They can take the shortcut by taking learning processes in a different manner. Teachers take the shortcut and beaten path by doing powerpoint presentations instead of doing class activities and hands on activities. By taking shortcuts, it takes away from the full effect that you receive and satisfaction from completing the entire task. When you take shortcuts you stop listening to other people and it shortens the creativity of the mind. It doesn’t allow for people to be open minded and to enhance their learning capabilities if you just cut corners in order to be done. So for this group we really elaborated on this topic and came to the conclusion that you should not cut corners in order to get it done, rather take the long path and enjoy the experience.

In this discussion group we talked about how everyone always takes the beaten track or the shortcut to get where they want to be. But the problem is, is that if everyone always takes the shortcut then the shortcut will no longer be short. We also talked about the benefits of not taking the “beaten path” or shortcut. We talked about how taking a shortcut does not always help in the long run. For example, on homework’s in class. If one student is just copying off of another, then when it comes time for the exam that student who copied will not understand what is going on and will then get a bad grade. By taking the easy and short way, people often make mistakes. When also writing a paper if you are copying another’s work, it is taking away from the creativity from yourself and then you receiving a worse grade rather than you just working hard and taking the long way and getting a better grade because you are being lazy.

Discussion Group 2

In our discussion group, we talked about Friere’s quote “The truth is, however, that the oppressed are not “marginals,” are not people living “outside” society. They have always been “inside”—inside the structure which made them “beings for others.” Oppression is a major topic not only in Friers story but in todays society. Obviously with everything going on with police brutality in lower income neighborhoods and Colin Kaepernick expressing his situations in the NFL and social media. Its obvious that on the news we see this everyday within lower income neighborhoods such as Chester for example. Chester is a major example that Jake has taken his time to supply school supplies for underprivileged kids in the area who may have been oppressed in the past. What Frier said in his story was that students are on the “inside” and they can’t get out because they are being oppressed or being trapped. They need help getting out so Jake talked about how he helps out those kids.

It compares students to containers by teachers just lecturing the entire time and students just retaining the information. After a while the container will eventually be filled, and you will start to lose the information. This negatively impact their learning abilities by them forgetting what they were even listening to. This is turning into memorization instead of actually learning. Teachers don’t necessarily understand the fact that all students have more than just their class and they also have other information that they have to retain. Some Gen Ed professors give the most work even though it is only a class that students are made to take. Students major classes don’t give as much work as Gen Ed courses. So for the simple fact that we need more hands on learning instead of PowerPoint lectures would be helpful in the educational atmosphere. This way students don’t get bored and they are engaged in their classes because like I stated before, once the container is filled and starts to overflow is when students struggle the most. Especially if there is more than one class.
