In this group we talked about a question percy asked “is looking like sucking: the more lookers, the less there is to see. Basically what we discussed is that when you are looking on to somebody else’s life and not being your own person, you dont see the world for how its supposed to be. Being your own person opens your own horizon and will show you what the meaning of YOUR life is. If you live your life being a follower you will never see that side of life. We also discussed that when people see something or get something the less value it becomes to them. Its like when you really want something and you finally get it and realize its not that good. We also discussed that everyone sees certain things differently which goes back to the point that its YOUR life.

Topic: Topic 3 Teacher student relationships at wcu

Thesis: Freire states that learning has a lot to do with a teacher and student and teacher relationship, here at WCU these relationships can be transformed through better communication, understanding students’ interests, and getting to know each other better.

Two quotes from Freire:

“The oppressed are regarded as the pathology of the healthy society, which must therefore adjust these “incompetent and lazy” folk to its own patterns by changing their mentality. These marginals need to be “integrated,” “incorporated” into the healthy society that they have “forsaken.”” Page 2 P3

“the teacher chooses and enforces his choice, and the students comply” Page 1 bullet point F

Problem posing is a better way of learning because it makes students think about what they’re learning and having to learn. Banking information is just memorizing and you wind up forgetting things after just memorizing over and over again. We related to highschool being how you memorized over and over for a test and then didnt actually keep the information you learned. College gen ed classes could work the same way, why save information for something youll never need in life? Usually students just remember what they can for a test and then forget about it for the future. Colleges want more of your money and time which forces you to take these classes where you just bank the information but never actually learn it. People don’t follow their passions and  they wind up doing a job they dont love doing. After all our discussion we all agreed problem posing works better than banking information and it would change some of the problems mentioned before.

A traditional classroom works better because each student gets equal help while in a lecture hall you usually dont know the professor as well as in a smaller classroom. The spacing in a smaller classroom allows you to have more interactions with your professor compared to in a lecture where the professor usually never knows your name. I feel that you learn better if you know your professor more. Learning has a lot to do with the environment around you. If you are in a smaller class you may learn better because you can interact with your professor more, but in a lecture its hard to pay attention and learn because there are way more people. Lastly, an online course is a very weird way of learning in my opinion because you arent face to face with a teacher you’re working all on your own.

Freire compares students to containers because they dont learn anything and they just store info in their brain like a container. One comparison I made was to a file cabinet, a brain is the same way you can only hold so much in it till you have to empty what you already had or get a new one losing all that old information. It is bad for students because they’re never going to hold onto information they learned in the past. As freire also said, students way of “learning” is just repetition over and over until they memorize it. They will never retain any of this information. I think a way a teacher and student can work together is to think of a different way to teach. It says in the writing that teachers see students as very dumb and they are superior to them. If they didn’t think this way and actually tried to help the students learn by being more hands on instead of just lecturing over and over until the students memorize the material, it would make it a much better learning experience for students.
