In Ruthie’s discussion group we discussed what our motivation is for learning and how we learn best. We all agreed that everybody learns different ways and it is easier for some people to learn one way that may not work for others. The way we learn best is when topics are made interesting, or even making them interesting in your own mind to help motivate you to want to learn. A great way to motivate yourself to learn is working with a group. Work with people who are willing to talk about a topic and want to collaborate. This helps get other people’s point of view and make it more interesting bouncing ideas off of each other. We also talked about the last writing project and reflected on that and the upcoming writing project, discussing the different topics and what we are thinking about writing for them. We all hope to get an A so that we don’t have to write the last one!

In our discussion group today we talked about how Freire thinks people learn and if we agree or disagree. We agreed that throughout Freire’s article he contradicts himself many times in his writing. He explains that to be taught you must learn from yourself and dig deep into things to actually learn from yourself. By what Freire says I think he means, to learn something you must understand it deeply enough that you can teach it to someone else so that you can fully take it in and understand it yourself. I do not agree with him. I believe that people can learn from each other. From face to face interaction and communication with somebody else. During our discussion we also talked about housing on and off campus, just because it came up. Many of us are looking for apartments next year, but they are very expensive so we will see where everybody ends up.

Today we discussed Friere’s points that “The teacher teaches and the students are taught” as well as, “the teacher knows everything and the students know nothing”. We all agreed that teacher can learn things from students and that teachers are not always right. When students put their own input into things they are learning it usually ends up being beneficial to other students that are in that class. Students that give their input may help their fellow classmates to learn and understand the topic better. Teachers also can learn from students. The way a student thinks versus the way a teacher thinks can be very different. When students express what they think and things they know the teacher can learn from that. Rather than the teacher only teaching, students can help expand other students knowledge by saying what they think. Students giving their input and ideas also engages them into conversation and it is more likely that they are going to retain the information they are being taught if it can be a discussion instead of sitting there and being lectured to.
Today in my discussion group we discussed if students are being taught or if they are being taught to memorize. Most people in the group agreed that in high school we all memorized the information we were taught because we were forced to be there and most of the things we were taught we will never need in our lives. College students are paying for an education, rather than being forced to go to school like high school. If you are in college it is because you want to be there, to learn and succeed. Learning the topics that we are taught will be more helpful in the long run, rather than memorizing them for a short amount of time to then forget them after being tested. You must learn things to fully understand what is going on and be able to build on from it. College students are going to school so that they can start a career. They still may not be taking classes they always want but they are made so that you can get somewhere and it is something they themselves are interested in. In the end, if you want to get information out of something you are better off applying yourself and learning it.
