Response to Riley

Group: Riley, Nick, Jake H., Tyler

We all agreed with the idea that the students are just a product of the teacher and are like robots that follow what the teacher says.  We did think that there are classes where you are more like a robot than others. Classes that involve math or science may make a student feel more like a robot because they do not know how to solve a problem and the teacher has to teach them the right way to complete the problem.  I know that these are the classes that I tend to feel more like a robot. Some English classes though allow you to be more creative and do things how you want to do them. By assigning a project instead of having the class sit down and listen to a lecture, the students have more creativity in completing the task.  For the most part, it depends on how the teacher wants to get the information across to the students.

Our group came to a pretty common consensus which was in most cases students are like robots mimicking their teacher. We all agreed that most times students do not actually understand what they’re learning, instead they just memorize the information and regurgitate when needed. There is a big difference between understanding and memorization. When you have an understanding of something you know why you’re doing what you’re doing, you understand the reasoning behind your work. In some classes like math, social studies, history and science students tend to act more robotic than others such as writing and speech where students are forced to have an opinion and put thought behind their work. Classes like math simply require the students to memorize steps to an equation and repeat them. Teachers can alter the way there students understand and interact the content being taught. Ways that this can be achieved is by getting the students more engaged and causing them to gain a deeper understanding of the information.
