Are discussion groups a waste of time

I think that discussion groups are a waste of time. I think this because not many people put a lot of effort into them. Our group discussed how people come to the groups unprepared and not ready to talk about the topic of the week. Also, we noticed that throughout the semester some people were scared to talk and say their opinion, and if they do talk, they repeat what others have said. Also, most people make the group meet on Thursday and Fridays and they rush the discussion to get it done. We talked about how we think the idea of discussion group is good, but they need more structure and student’s effort.  An example could be making set locations that the students should meet at because there is a lot of mix up with the location. Overall, we think that the discussion groups were a waste of time and could use some more structure.

PEER REVEIW LONG DRAFT:Nik Passias

Praise:

Makayla: Your intro is strong and you have a lot of good points for learning outside the classroom

Maura: Your idea of study groups is really good

Gwen: Your Paragraph on peer tutoring and the teacher not always staying on topic is good because this happens in real life.

Constructive:

Makayla: Try to relate the topic to West Chester more in your intro

Maura: You should add more to your second paragraph it ends fast

Gwen: Try to change your wording for the beginning of the paragraphs instead of saying “another way”

Percy:

Makayla: your use of percy for the first reason relates well to your idea and you interpreted it well

Maura: The use of percy in the second paragraph relates well to the way learning can happen outside the classroom and West Chetser

Gwen: The quote used for the peer tutoring relates well to the way teachers teach and the way that students have to learn in college

Peer Review- Draft 1 for Luke J

Praise:
Makayla- I like how you used a quote in your intro
Maura- The connection between West Chester, the problem, the solution, and Percy is strong.
Gwen- Your off to a really good start I think that your paragraphs are strong especially your intro

Constructive:
Makayla- Type the full number (twelve- fourteen)
Maura- try to work on your transition from paragraph to paragraph
Gwen- avoid talking in first person

Percy:
Makayla- This is a good quote in connecting Percy to your idea of students shadowing other students
Maura- The explanation you had with this quote is very good and backs up your idea
Gwen- I think connecting Frier and Percy in your essay is a great idea because it adds more evidence

Peer review 2: Isabella Bedore

PEER REVIEW 2:

Praise:

Makayla: I think that your first sentence of your intro is strong and catches your reader’s attention

Maura : the different ways you gave that students can learn the material in a non-traditional way is good

Gwen: You have very strong evidence to back up your points.

Constructive:

Makayla :  have a set thesis that points out the main ideas of what the paper is going to be about

Maura: try to find another way to introduce your next topic in your last paragraph instead of saying “ another way to”

Gwen: Work on your transitions from paragraph to paragraph, but other than that it looks  good!

Percy:
Makayla: The idea of having the classrooms be more of a student centered style of learning can be connected with Percy because he always says that the teacher shouldnt be the expert and the students should have more of a  leadership role in the classroom.

Maura:Your use of Percy in your paragraphs is good and connects to the way he sees how education is and they way that students should be learning

Gwen: The first quote that you picked goes very well with your connection to Percy and supports your first body paragraph.

Peer review on Mia and Emily

Praise:

Maura: Your thesis is good and explains why we should take classes outside of our own majors.

Makayla: Your second topic is good because it backs up your thesis by saying you need other classes outside your major.

Gwen: All your topics are good just try to relate them more to Percy

Constructive:

Maura: i would look over your third topic and revise it to relate more to Percy

Makayla: for your first topic try to more in depth when relating to Percy

Gwen: i would change your second sentence in your thesis to your new ideas

Percy: The quote you used for your second topic is really good make sure to incorporate it into the topic.

Relating the quote for your third topic is good and corresponds well with how Percy tells us that when we are trying to get the value X we only get a millionth of X .

The dogfish quote from Percy relates well with your first topic on learning learning other topics other than our major.

Peer review on Bella D

Praise:

Maura: You have some very strong points in your thesis that you can write your paper on

Makayla: I like how you connected both Frier and Percy in this essay, i feel like it will really back up your work and support your topic.

Gwen: I think the idea of having open discussions is a great idea for the topic you picked.
Constructive:

Maura: There are a couple typos in the third sentence that could be fixed
Makayla: I think your thesis is a little long
Gwen: shorten your thesis and make a clear point on what the essay will be about (thesis statement)

Percy:

Maura: The quote from Frier backs up your idea of teachers teaching, but try to find more Percy quotes on that as well.

Makayla: I think that the two quote you picked could potentially be very useful when supporting your evidence.

Gwen: I think you can relate the dogfish quote from Percy to the idea of how teachers can teach topics that aren’t related to the class

In this discussion we discussed how comparing an experience to a previous one will affect the later experience. I think the first experience does affect the later one, because we go into the next experience with a mindset. If you had a poor experience the first time you did something, you are less to try it again and have an open mind about it. Also, when someone tells you about an experience they had before you experience it personally, that can ruin your time as well. We also discussed that Percy suggests ways for someone to have a better experience with something. You can’t go into something with your mind made up about how it’s going to be, because that could ruin the whole outcome of the experience. We discussed that one bad experience should not ruin the next one, and that people should have more of an open mind when trying things out.

Freire’s Banking Concept: Lack of Education in the Classroom

Paulo Freire “The Banking Concept of Learning” is about the mechanical flaw in modern education, and ways to fix the corrupt system. Friere believes that there is a flawed conception of teachers depositing information onto the students, which he calls the banking concept of learning. He believes that this is wrong, and students won’t be able to learn because teachers are just using repetition to teach, rather than actually having the students learn the information. At West Chester University there are many classes that do what Freire advises people not to do. The biggest example and focus of this essay is the class called First- Year experience, or FYE for short. First- Year Experience is a class for freshmen that help students get to know campus better, and help students smoothly transition to college life. First Year Experience takes place in a large lecture-based class. The class is held three times a week for an hour and fifteen minute period. Freire’s “The ‘Banking’ Concept of Learning” relates to West Chester University because of the lack of education that occurs in the First Year Experience class.

First- Year Experience is supposed to help students to adapt to college life and learn how to deal with the problems that they encounter along throughout their four years or more here at West Chester. The class, however, is taught by four professors from the university. These four professors are from different areas of study and are a wide variety of ages and personality. Some of these professors have not been first year students recently and may not exactly know what first year students wish they had access to or the knowledge to accomplish certain tasks. These professors also may not have ever been students at West Chester University. Due to these two reasons, the professors may not know what is needed by first year students, specifically the ones here at West Chester University. Therefore, having more experienced students, such as seniors at the university, teach the class since they have recently been students. They have acquired endless depths of knowledge that these new students could find immensely beneficial. This could be much more helpful for the first year students. It could also be easier for seniors who know exactly what the first year students need rather than professors trying to imagine what is needed. The seniors know how the first year students are feeling in this time of transition in their lives since they just went through it recently.

The professors are currently making lesson plans based on what they personally believe that first year students need to be successful. However, once again the problem emerges that these professors have not been first year students in some time and may have never even been students at West Chester University. Therefore, the problem will be restated that the professors are unsure of what is truly needed by these students at the time. A helpful solution could be that a survey is taken by the current or previous students, asking what they recommend be taught in this course.

Topic Proposal:

Topic Selection: Topic 1

Team Selection: Gwen Jordan, Maura Kelly, Makayla Medycki

Working Thesis: Freire’s “The ‘Banking’ Concept of Learning” relates to West Chester University because of the way the professors belittle the students and hand them information without further concern about their understanding of it. The space of West Chester University is primarily based on computers.

2 Quotes:

“The teacher knows everything and the student knows nothing.”

“The teacher talks and the students listen — meekly.”

On September 19 at 3:40 my group discussed how no one teaches others, and how people don’t teach themselves. This means that you don’t learn by being taught, but you learn from teaching others. When students are lectured, they don’t learn, because the teacher is just spewing facts and information at them and they can’t apply the information they’re being taught. Learning is understanding the topic, and you don’t understand it until you apply it to the real world. Also, to learn, you must engage in the conversation and topic that you are learning about. The best way to learn is through communication. Freire’s “Banking Concept of learning” says that teachers aren’t able to teach students by sharing information in a classroom. Teachers think that repeating information over and over again will help the student learn, but it doesn’t. People mainly learn by teaching others the information and applying it to real life experiences.

On Friday September 13 my group discussed what makes a teacher good and bad and how it relates to Freire “Banking concept of Learning”. A good teacher is someone who makes connections with their students and goes out of their way to get to know each student they teach. When teachers know what kind of learners they are teaching, the students tend to be more successful in the class. Another quality that makes the teacher good is when they engage their students rather than lecture them. In Freire concept of learning he talked about how teachers are only teaching their students by repeating information over and over until their students memorize it. This is an example of a bad teaching method, because in the end the students don’t know what they are actually learning. Freire also said that the teachers are there strictly to do their job, then leave. This is also a bad quality of a teacher, good teachers like their job and what their teaching.

Response to Olivia Vearling

In today’s discussion my group talked about the article, “Banking Concepts of Education” by Paulo Freire. We had discussed whether or not we agreed with the statement that teachers know everything, and the students know nothing. As a group we discussed that teachers should stop having the students memorizing information, and instead have them retain it. The teachers think that having the students repeat information will make them know it, and in most cases that is correct, but they don’t know how to apply the information. We also brought up the fact that the author made it seem like an oppressed society. He painted the picture as the teacher being the tyrant and the students are like the slaves. For example, the students lack creativity because they are unable to learn the way they want because the teacher has all the power. Teachers lecture because it is easier to get information across rather than engaging the students because it is less work for them. In conclusion, the banking concept has students only learn from repetition, and does not teach the students the right information.
