Make sure that the students are retaining the information and not just memorizing it. The teachers are like tyrants and the students are slaves because they can’t do anything else except just listen to the teacher. Their creativity is suppressed by not being able to express themselves . A lot of teachers just lecture to the students and do less work for themselves. Many teachers have kids just read their material and make them memorize their content. The students are treated like robots in the way they are learning the material. We talked about that students need more time so they can express how they feel through their work. The teachers should be able to connect with the students in class. Teachers need to spend more time while grading test to make sure that the students are understanding the information being taught. Many students can get nervous when asking questions in class because they don’t want to sound behind anyone else. Liv Vearling led the discussions. The people who were there were: David Macmullen, Jeff Biancaniello, Gwen Jordan, Makayla Medycki, Sam Zivorno, Cait Mangini, Laura McGroary, Seamus Corkery, Haley Clark and Amanda Regan.

I disagree with this statement because I feel that students do know information on what the teachers know also. I feel that the teachers try and just make us memorize everything and I feel that that’s why people say teachers know everything because they just tell us information without us understanding it. I also disagree with this because the students could actually teach the teachers something because they may have knowledge on the topic. The student could help the class out because I feel when a teacher talks for too long the students will not listen as much. When the kids in the class start talking I feel it gets the students more engaged to the conversation. The different styles of teaching could help because the students would rather not sit through a lecture all day. Once a student says something I feel like another student would want to say something too join the conversation and it could help with learning.

Students have no say in what they learn

In this weeks discussion we will talk about when Friere says “The teacher chooses the program content, and the students (who were not consulted) adapt to it.” Do you believe students have no say in education? Is this fair? Does it happen often? Think about how you feel about this statement and if you have ever felt that it has happened to you for our discussion group.

Paulo Freire discussion

When Freire say, “Education thus becomes an act of depositing, in which the students are the depositories and the teacher is the depositor.” Do you agree or disagree.

Time and date: Friday September 6 @ 3:30

location: At tables outside Starbucks.

Freire describes students and teachers as “opposites.”

In this discussion group we will talk about how Freire describes teachers as being “opposites” of the students, not allowing us to express creativity. Also, we will discuss how Freire states that in this misguided education system, through a lack of creativity students are unable to be truly human.

Time and Date: Friday September 6th at 10:00

Location: Main Hall 300

Memorization

  1. During this discussion group we will talk about memorization, how it benefits a student, and how it disadvantages a student. In Freire’s essay he discusses how teachers just flush information into students but never truly give them the knowledge. Before coming to my discussion group, think about this question; In highschool, or in college, do you feel as though you are being taught or only being taught to memorize?
  2. Thursday September 5th @ 3:30

“The teacher knows everything and the students know nothing”

In this discussion we will be talking about the statement that the teachers know everything and the students know nothing. Think about if you agree or disagree with this and why? and why is this a common thought in our society?

Topic: “The ‘Banking’ Concept of Education”

Time and date: September 5, 12:30

Location: Seating area in front of university Hall

The “Banking” Concept of Education

This group will discuss the idea that “the teacher knows everything and the students know nothing” and how this occurs in the modern classroom.

Topic: The concept of banking as stated by Freire, and whether or not students also teach the teacher, and sometimes know more than the teacher.

Date/Time: Friday, September 6, 9:00 a.m.

Location: Main Hall 300

Why Freire refers Students Trash Receptacles

In this discussion, we will talk about why Freire refers to us students as trash cans when it comes to learning and retaining information. Think about how the education system could be changed and how you can relate to feeling like a trash receptacle in school.

Topic: Education

Student=Robot: In the eyes of Freire

  1. This group will discuss the idea that students are a direct product of the teacher and have no opinion or originality in learning. The students are just a product of the teacher and are like robots that follow what the teacher says. Before discussion decide if you agree or disagree with this idea; think about if you have ever felt like a robot following what a teacher wants you to learn.
  2. This group will meet at 10:00 am on Friday, September 6th
  3. Meet in the academic quad in front of main hall

Teacher Teaches, Students are Taught

This weeks discussion group will be based on the first page of Friere’s writing piece. We will go into further detail about the concept that “teachers teach and students are only taught.” If you are interested in this discussion ask yourself the question, “Do teachers only teach and do students only get taught?”
