Discussion Group 10/25

Topic: In class we are discussing The Loss of the Creature article. Percy talks about what seeing/learning is and what it is not. The question Dr. Cream posed in class was this: “Are you an individual who learns for themselves- to experience for themselves?” My questions for this discussion group are these: What is our motivation for learning? And how do we best learn?

Location: Main Hall 300 Friday @10am

Discussion for week of 10/14

Leader: John Camperson

Topic: In “The Loss of the Creature” by Walker Percy, he mentions how “the present is surrendered to the past and the future” (Percy 1). In this discussion group we are going to discuss what he means by this, as well as what he means by there being no present.

Date: Friday @ 10 am

Location: Tables outside of Lawrence

Discussion Group Week of 10/14

Leader: Muhammad Rabi

Topic: In the reading, The Loss of the Creature, Percy talked about everyone taking the beaten track/shortcut which does not make it short anymore. In this discussion group, we will be talking about the benefits of not taking the shortcut and other’s opinions if people should take the shortcut or not.

Location: Main Hall 300 Friday @10am

Discussion week 10/14

In “The Loss of the Creature” by Walker Percy, he talked about how our experience gets influenced by media and how we are not in the moment.  In this discussion group we will talk about if you agree or disagree that social media has impacted our reputation. Social media can act as an individuals daily life, which could lead to manipulation of that certain platform. The constant need for perfection is one way a person feels the need to announce their whereabouts.

Location: First floor of Sykes. Meet in front of Eco Grounds.

Date: Friday 10/18 @2pm

Discussion Group Week of 10/14

In The Loss of the Creature, Percy Walker presents multiple ways to “recover” a natural beauty such as the Grand Canyon, but is it even possible to have another view of a place, to leave the beaten track after even a single idea or viewpoint is presented?

Time: 1 P.M. on Thursday 10/17

Location: Tables outside of Lawrence

Discussion group 10/14

Leader: Leah Schreffler

Topic: This discussion group will talk about our own experiences of travel. We will discuss if traveling is for one’s personal pleasure or a way to flaunt to others. Do people have standards when it comes to traveling? It is better to go to a location that you are not familiar with? Percy’s makes us question if our experience lives up to its biggest potential when we see other people’s experiences first.

Location: Friday 10/18 @ 2 pm at tables outside of university hall

The Bigger Picture

This discussion group is going to discuss Percy’s idea of how one is not in the moment at all times. When exploring new places and parts of the world, are people fully taking in the site ahead or are they worrying about getting pictures to flaunt in front of their friends?

Location: Quad outside of University Hall

Date: October 19, 2019

Time: 9:00am

Topics for Discussion Group 3

Group Members: Richard Walther and Donald Lessing

Imagine only being exposed to only one race, class, or gender? When are group met up today we discussed the topic of teachers and their relationships with students at WCU regarding race, gender, class etc. Our main topic of discussion is how some teachers can be very ignorant about students background and how they can be so close-minded. If they grew up in an older generation there values and beliefs are going to be totally different then how they are if you lived in this generation today. Some teachers will only stick to the stuff that they know because that’s the only thing they grew up on. To add, if they keep being so ignorant they won’t be able to listen or even connect to their students if they wanted to. All feels as though as teachers should take some type of class or training to focus more on getting to know different races and genders so they can be prepared for the future that is ahead of them. Also, if you only grew up knowing one race, class, or gender you cannot relate to the other population of class besides the one you know.

Topic: Do you agree with friers ways of teaching?

I do agree with his ways of teaching because of how he portrays it.  He contradicts himself in order to show how complicated the relationship between the teacher and student can be. I agree with how he shows this because due to the gap between students and teachers, neither party are able to learn. With that, this relationship can be saved, by firm communication on both ends, ensuring that both the student and teacher are equal in the class room.

Writing Topic 3 Leadership

When: Sunday @ 1

Where: Tables outside of Starbucks next to the library

About: The group will be talking about topic 3 and how it applies to Freire and WCU. We will shortly analyze Freire’s words and talk about how they relate to the students and faculty.

Discussion Group Week 3

Leader: Joshua Rogers

Topic: In this discussion group, we are going to discuss Freire’s claim that “…no one teaches another, nor is anyone self-taught. People teach each other…”(Page 4). We will attempt to make clarity of this claim and hopefully come to a better understanding of what Freire is trying to say.

Date: Thursday, September 19

Location: Tables outside of Starbucks

How does one learn productively? (discussion week 3)

Leader: Haley Myers

Time: Thursday Sept 19, 2019 @9am

Location: the sofas right inside of Sikes when you walk into the building from the main entrance

Topic: For this week’s topic, we are going to talk about the concept of learning. Learning is a concept that requires a minimum of 2 people that requires communication. In what way does Freire portray how a person can learn productively? What is the process of learning for one to comprehend simple subjects? After the discussion, a question to ask yourself is what have you learned from the discussion itself?

Week 3 Discussion Group

Included in the topics for the writing project, there is a subject of the power students have in a learning environment. This discussion group will be talking about how a student can help themselves, teachers and their peers learn in a classroom. Also we will discuss how we can use this knowledge in the upcoming writing project.

Location: Tables Outside Lawrence

When: Friday September, 20th @ 3:30

Response to Isabella Bedore

In this group we talked a lot about how West Chester’s campus is laid out. We talked about how the library should be closer to the dorms because it makes no sense for students too have to walk that far. But it is good that the classrooms are spread out from the dorms because it makes it a different environment. You get out of the chill mode you were in while in your dorm. We also talked about how classes of high quantity are very inefficient because if a student has a question, it is hard for a professor to see them when there are 200 students in one study hall. West Chester made a mistake also we believe with the first year experience class. This is because of how everyone has a different opinions and mindsets so it always just turns into a political debate. There are improvements West Chester could make to make our education more convenient and efficient. Let’s hope they will keep striving to fix some of the problems that we face as students.

Response to Caitlin Mangini

group: Amanda Regan, Srarah veneziale, Meghan kidd, Seamus Corkery, Sabrina lindeley, Haley Clark, Ava Hill

Response: In today’s discussion we talked about how students are supposed to just obtain all the information teachers give them like a robot without even processing the content. People can agree with this because teachers expect you to know the answer right away and they will randomly call you out and put you on the spot to answer anything they ask. Teachers read from power points and except the students to just know everything and memorize everything that was put on the screen. They dont take the time to explain it and make the students understand fully. Students then most likely feel stressed because they have to learn all the material in order to pass tests. People could also disagree with this because the teachers expect you to make the most out of what they tell you in class so its up to you what you want to gain from it. When teachers lecture at you it is up to you to re teach yourself the material and make sure you understand what is going on.
